Revision programme for an A2 course

Topics and themes

We work on learning vocabulary and idioms in order to reinforce the student's communicative skills

All the grammar seen in A1, plus:

Future perfect and perfect conditional
Structures with "Si"
Verbs followed with " à/de"
The passive
Reported speech
Direct and indirect object pronouns

The structure of the day is similar for A1 and A2.
The topics, themes and grammar content vary but the
approach and the structure of the teaching day are identical.


Students' personal projects, extended essay and Oral presentation

We organise visits if we think we can bring a new dimension to students' own projects.
We have taken individual students to:

The "Musée Jean Moulin "in Bordeaux (projects on La résistance and Jean Moulin)
The " Musée de l'Hydravion "(project on St Exupéry)
L'association "Les Restaus du Coeur", a charity where students spent a day
L'association "Les Blouses roses", a charity where students spent a day. Students visited the Hôpital des enfants and une Maison de retraite to observe the Blouses roses at work in their environment
The Tramway Bordeaux information centre for a project on "Transport in XXth century". The student took the tramway and reported to the others on how it differs from any other means of transport.

We encourage the students to not be afraid of choosing something different.
We make sure they have a good source of information and help them arrange
interviews in order to have first-hand experience whenever possible.


Teaching material

We do not use standard A1 or A2 books for teaching material in order
not to have a feeling of "déjà vu" when the students return to school.

Our grammar teaching material has been written by us or comes from French
teaching sources. We also use up-to-date press articles and French television.


Skills

We do our best to ensure the students have a balanced approach to their revision
programme and work equally on their four skills. However, some students feel confident
in one specific skill and wish to address others. We adapt the programme in order to
allow each student to reach their full potential. Once we have made a diagnostic of
their strength and weaknesses each student can work independently in the afternoon.

Oral skills

Listening skills

We hope students will make an enthusiastic contribution to around the table discussions.

Students will discuss issues or literary topics. The aim is to gain in confidence, fluency and spontaneity as well as to acquire a wide range of vocabulary and structures through:
1.Preparing topics and presenting them *(Bring your own oral topic)*
2. Discussing topics (for/ against)
3. Taking part in role plays
4. Reporting and discussing the news of the day
5. Taking part in general conversation

Students will be be encouraged to watch the news daily and report to the group.

Student will also practice listening papers and study how to approach various tasks encountered during exams such as:
1. Answering questions in French
2. Making a summary in French
3. Filling gaps
4. Matching pairs (complete sentences)
5. Discriminating between true and false

 

Reading Skills

 

Writing skills

Students will acquire an understanding of written French by reading magazines and readers.

They will read for overall understanding as well as for details.

They will use past papers in order to study how to approach various exam tasks such as:
1. Learning how to time themselves
2. Taking educated guesses
3. Recognising semantic fields
Looking out for "faux amis"

Students will practice written tasks in order to
become confident in using complex sentence patterns.
We will look at the importance of:
1. Use of register
2. Accuracy / Grammar
3. Giving your opinion.

They will learn how to:
improve the structure of a piece of writing,
introduce their ideas in a coherent fashion,
develop their ideas and link them through,
draw thoughtful conclusions.

Students are encouraged to bring their extended essay and to look for ways of improving their work.
